For the round 36 of the Liga against Betis, Luis Suárez scored the 0-2 at the 80th minute after a wonderful pass from Messi.
The argentinian received all the praise - very well deserved - for that goal, but there is more that one can see at first glance.
Neymar, Rakitic and even Sergi Roberto were also important in that goal.
Let´s have a look.
First, when we all thought Messi would take advantage of the disorder in both teams, the 10 decided it should be wiser to wait.
Betis and Barcelona have time to organize themselves.
Rakitic and Neymar will go between the Betis midfield and defense.
Once all are in their position, the midfielders cannot see Rakitic and Neymar. The centerbacks have to look after them.
Even the left fullback must keep an eye on Sergi Roberto.
Suárez is out of the visual field of all the defenders.
The left centerback decides he has to go press Rakitic, since he is likely to receive the pass from Messi. He leaves his space and the left fullback cannot get closer to him, since he still wants to keep an eye on Sergi Roberto.
On the other side, the right centerback is focused on Neymar and Suárez has passed the right fullback. He will attack the space at the back of the defence, playing with the offside line.
Since no one attacks Messi, he has plenty of time to think and execute.
He has seen Suárez and sends him a wonderful pass to leave him 1 to 1 against the goalkeeper.
The right fullback has also seen the move from Suárez and warns the centerback. But it is too late, the Uruguayan will not miss and he scores the final 0-2.
With this camera angle, we can appreciate the importance of occupying the space between the lines. Neymar and Rakitic influence the centerbacks. Suárez takes advantage.
Messi sees the space, the run towards it, and is able to send the pass exactly where Suárez wants it.
Summing up, this goal shows that playing with the visual reference of the opponent is very important. Make them focus on some players, make others "disappear", and you will gain a great advantage.
Ah, and giving so much time to Messi, although far from the goal, is definitively not a very good idea :-)
lack of pressure on the ball carrier. If the player on the ball is a good one,you can't be passive towards him
