Tactics made easy - How Real Sociedad nullified FC Barcelona

On November 27th, Real Sociedad and FC Barcelona drew 1-1 in La Liga 2016/17,

Eusebio's Real Sociedad prevented Barça from building from the back and recovered the ball very high on the pitch.

At half time, I tweeted the following maps from FCBarcelona.com:

• Recoveries from Real Sociedad: they had recovered more in Barça's half than in their own half!

• Passes from FC Barcelona: Verticality everwhere, and failed passes everywhere as well.

How did Eusebio's team achieve this?

Real Sociedad pressed very cleverly Luis Enrique's players.

Their plan was to force Barça to pass the ball to Mascherano and Alba, and then press them against the touchline.

By doing this they either recovered the ball very high or forced the culés to send long passes towards Neymar, which were easily won by la Real.

That way Barça kept on losing the ball time after time and were unable to play as they wanted to.
