Playing with numbers: Top 5 Leagues

During this international break, I had a look at the offensive stats from Whoscored.com for the top 5 leagues.

We already checked stats for La Liga, and I wanted to compare the 2599 players of the leagues from Spain, Germany, Italy, France and England.

To make stats meaningful, I passed all of them to "per 90min", and I only took into account players with more than 1450 minutes played as of 30 March 2015.

The results are the following:

1) Who shoots the most and scores the most ?
CR7 and Messi play on their own League.
Big names stand behind them: Agüero, Robben, Ibrahimovic...

2) And what if we do the same for players under 23 ?
Future is theirs: Vietto, Kane, Lacazette, Neymar and Icardi.

3) But not everything is scoring.
Therefore I checked Goals and Assists.
Best passers are De Bruyne, Cesc, Cheryshev, Di María.. and Messi.
The thing is that Leo also scores 6 times what those do !

4) Under 23, two groups appear.
Best scorers are Kane, Lacazette and Neymar.
Best passers are DeBruyne (by far !), Koke and Isco.

5) Sometimes, scoring and assisting or not is just a question of centimeters.
So let's check shots and key passes (=passes leading to a shot).

Messi and Robben have similar figures.
A new name appears: Payet (OM) is the best key passer by far.

6) Doing the same exercise for players under 23, the men with most influence on the offensive part of the game are DeBruyne, Eriksen and Calhanoglu.

7) Since I was with offensive sats, I also checked dribbling.
But I wanted to take into account the tendency to retain the ball.
If you are a good dribbler but loose the ball easily you are not a great asset.
It is "risky" to give it to you.
So I included "Dispossessed" and "Unstable touch" (silly mistake) figures in the equation.
The result looks like this.

Dribblers who will not loose the ball are a huge asset for their team.
Robben, Messi, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Bellarabi fall in this category.

Regarding Messi and Hazard, it is often said that at least statswise the Belgian is as good as Leo at dribbling.
As you can see in the graph, they do produce the same succesfull dribbles per 90min, but Hazard looses the ball more often.

8) If we do the same with players under 23, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Moura, Neymar and Firmino are the "cleanest" dribblers.

 9) All those are cold numbers and do not reflect exactly what every player gives to his team.
But it does show at least tendencies and general behaviour.

Look at the graphs, some names in good positions are not very familiar.
Those would be the players teams will consider during the transfer season.
Let's see what happens !!

  1. Cool to see the current transfer activity in the light of these analyses. How did you actually extract the data from whoscored? Wanted to crawl it, but tables are built and data is retrieved using javascript. Would like to play around with the data as well.

  2. Yes, it is interesting to see if the clubs aim at the outstanding players - which is not always the case.
To extract the data, I simply copy pasted everything from the website to an excel file.
    Cheers !!
