Explaining football tactics - The false 9

In this video I explain in a simple way the concept of the false 9 and the differences with the classic 9.

1 – The classic 9 stands upfront and struggles with the centerbacks.
They share the same area and one is the reference for the others.
When the classic 9 moves, the centerbacks follow him because they know he will be back seconds later.

2 – The false 9 does not stay upfront.
He goes deeper into midfield and becomes an additional midfielder. Thus his team outnumbers the opponents in that area of the pitch and takes the control of the ball. The centerbacks are not willing to follow him so far away from their natural position because they would leave their area unattended.

3 – When finishing the attacks, the classic 9 stands in the box. He tries to escape from the defenders, thanks to short and powerful moves.

4 – On the contrary, the false 9 enters the box running from midfield. Thus he is very difficult to mark, since he is running while the centerbacks are standing inside the area.
